How to use simpleprot

simpleprot answers one question fast: “what’s the protocol for this?” Look something up in seconds before or during an appointment — sourced steps, material swaps, and clinical pearls, on a single card.

1 · Find a protocol

There are three ways in:

• Search. Start typing a procedure or material (e.g. zirconia, Biodentine, veneer). A dropdown shows matches as you type — press ↵ Enter to open the highlighted one, or click it. Use the ↑ / ↓ arrow keys to move through matches, or See all for the full results page.
• Browse by procedure. The tiles on the home page group protocols by clinical act (cementation, endodontics, restorative…). Each tile shows how many protocols it holds.
• Browse by material / brand. “I have this in my hand.” Find a product, its family, and what you can use instead.

2 · Read a protocol card

Every card follows the same shape, top to bottom:

• Breadcrumb — the path to the protocol (procedure → family → item). Click any step to move back up.
• Adhesion banner — the question that started this project: does this need an adhesion protocol? Green = required, with the rule; grey = not at this step.
• Gold standard — the evidence-proven default for this protocol, in one line, kept in view as your anchor. The recommended materials below are the gold-standard combination; swap one and the card flags “alternative selected — differs from the gold-standard default.” The proof is for the approach and the material class — specific brands are interchangeable examples.
• Setup — the tray/room checklist an assistant can lay out before you sit down.
• Instruments & materials — the reusable instruments to set out, then the full material kit. Swap any material for an alternative, or pick an ecosystem preset (your RelyX or Panavia line, say) — the preset just fills the swappable slots.
• Considerations — when two acceptable techniques exist (e.g. scalpel vs tissue punch), the card explains how to choose. These are options to weigh, not the single proven default.
• Procedure — numbered steps to follow top to bottom, like a recipe. Pearls hang off the step they belong to.
• Sources — the peer-reviewed references behind each step, from trusted databases like PubMed and the Cochrane Library, each with its DOI, so you can check the evidence yourself.

Tip · Prep the tray, then fold it away

Setup, Instruments, and Materials open by default, so the whole team works from one list. Lay out the tray and prep the room before the patient is in the chair — everyone sees the exact same kit, so there’s no scrambling or miscommunication once the procedure is under way.

When the tray is set, collapse those sections (tap the section caret). They fold to a one-line “N items” count and the Procedure rises to fill the space — so during treatment the card shows just the steps you’re following, nothing else.

3 · What simpleprot is — and isn’t

simpleprot is a general professional reference for qualified dental professionals. It presents general protocols as information. It is not a medical device: it takes no patient data and gives no patient-specific recommendation.

It does not replace your clinical judgement, your training, a diagnosis, or the manufacturer’s instructions for use. Always verify a protocol against current evidence, your regulations, and the product’s IFU before clinical use. Full terms are in the Disclaimer & Limitation of Liability.

Every protocol is drafted from peer-reviewed sources and reviewed by a clinician before it goes live — but evidence moves, and so do techniques. Every card has a “Suggest a correction / flag” box at the bottom — it goes privately to the clinical reviewer and is never published. Use it for corrections, a better source, or a protocol you’d like added.
